SAT Math: Find a percent of a number

30+ practice questions in Praczo

What you need to know

The concept, explained

  • 1

    To find p% of N, compute (p/100) · N. For example, 15% of 200 = 0.15 · 200 = 30.

  • 2

    Convert the percent to a decimal first: 8% → 0.08, 120% → 1.20.

  • 3

For tips and discounts, percent of the original amount tells you how much to add (tip) or subtract (discount).

  • 4

For multi-step problems, apply percents one at a time — do not add percents unless they are of the same base.

Common mistakes
  • Using the percent as a whole number (e.g., multiplying by 15 instead of 0.15).
  • Confusing a percent of a number with percent change between two numbers.
