SAT Reading & Writing: Logical Connectors and Transitions

42+ practice questions in Praczo

What you need to know

The concept, explained

  • 1

Every transition signals a logical relationship. Identify whether the relationship is: addition, contrast, cause-effect, example, sequence, or concession.

  • 2

Addition: furthermore, moreover, additionally, also, in addition.

  • 3

Cause/result: therefore, thus, consequently, as a result, hence.

  • 4

Example/illustration: for instance, for example, specifically, in particular.

  • 5

Concession: admittedly, granted, while it is true that, to be sure.

  • 6

Process: read both sentences, identify their relationship, then pick the transition that matches — never guess by familiarity.

Common mistakes
  • Using 'therefore' (cause→effect) when the second idea is simply related but not a logical consequence of the first.
  • Confusing 'however' (contrast) with 'moreover' (addition) — the direction of the relationship is opposite.
